The En Garde Position
An Important Start
11 September 2017
The en garde position is the place to start for fencing. It is important to learn this position as you are told to get in it at the beginning of every bout (fencing match). It may seem strange to be in, however doing it helps you avoid more hits, lunge faster, and improves leg strength in general.
This position is a Segway into other actions, both offensive and defensive. En garde encompasses bending your knees and moving your shoulders back to where they are almost directly in line with each other. In addition, it is important to note that there are three major types of “swords” (properly known as weapons) in fencing. The point of this site is to be very specific in teaching three positions/actions, however, feel free to look at websites describing the background and rules of fencing. There are many sites out there to learn more about them. I have also included a video of this position for additional help.
