The Lunge

The Staple of Attacks

11 September 2017

The lunge is the most common offensive action in fencing. You will see this action frequently used against you in bouts. It is important to have a good understanding of this move, as many other actions stem from it. Defensive actions are often practiced against a lunge as well. This move incorporates explosiveness and quickness, however, you need to understand the action itself before developing those attributes of it. Timing is important regarding the lunge also. A slow lunge is usually ineffective, as the opponent will be able to recognize and adjust quickly.

Also, note that step 3 may seem a bit challenging but is necessary to include in the same step, as it needs to all be done simultaneously. That said, the lunge will become your staple action for some time, and getting a good grasp of the action now will help you greatly in the future.
